Rec Haus opened their doors in downtown St. Charles in November of 2025, turning an 8,500 square-foot space into an atmosphere that is redefining social entertainment. This unique destination is just steps away from many downtown shops, restaurants, and theatres, making it an exciting addition to an already vibrant district.

Inside the establishment (which was once a venue hosting notable musicians, including The Who), visitors can enjoy a wide range of video games and board games as well as staple bar activities including pool, darts, and shuffleboard. They even offer the opportunity for a friendly challenge, with weekly game leagues for pinball, bocce, and more.

Guests can also sip on numerous different styles of local craft brews, without the use of a bartender. Adults 21+ can utilize a self-pouring tap, which charges the patron per ounce. On top of the 24 local beers to choose from, visitors can dine from their selection of flatbreads, handhelds, and other bar fare, as well as drinks from the full bar.

This undertaking required clear and constant communication between Rec Haus and the City of St. Charles in order for it to be brought to life in an efficient manner. Rec Haus owner, Erik Gilly, said he felt the support early on in the development process. “From the very beginning, the city staff and leadership have been accessible, communicative, and genuinely invested in helping the concept succeed,” said Gilly. “The responsiveness from the city allowed us to keep momentum throughout construction and planning. Instead of delays or confusion, we consistently had clear guidance, timelines, and expectations.”

Rec Haus was able to utilize a variety of different grants offered by both the City of St. Charles and the St. Charles Business to “elevate the final look, feel, and long-term functionality.” The Building Improvement Grant was used to help offset the costs of various structural, safety, and accessibility renovations necessary for operating a hospitality business. Meanwhile the Façade and Storefront Improvement Grants helped improve the exterior presence of the building through signage, refurbishment, and overall visual enhancements that help boost the curb appeal of the building, all while keeping its historical integrity intact.

“Together, these grants didn’t just reduce costs – they elevated the finished product,” said Gilly. “The process felt collaborative rather than adversarial – which made a tremendous difference as a first-time venue owner.” To find more information regarding Rec Haus, please visit their website at www.rec-haus.com
